WATER RELATED NEWS:

The State; Runoff  Has  Panel in Hot Water; Charges of a conflict of interest taint efforts to contend with pesticide pollution from Central Valley farms. Critics say outside help is needed:

There are an estimated 7 million acres of irrigated cropland in the valley. Winter storms and summer irrigation waters wash pesticides off them. The runoff then drains into streams and canals and ultimately the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, a source of water for millions of Californians.

California; Lettuce Samples Found Tainted; Conclusions on per chlorate are elusive, but environmental group calls for action:

The four lettuce samples all contained substantial quantities of per chlorate. One, a packaged variety of organic mixed baby greens, had a level of per chlorate contamination at least 20 times as high as the amount California considers safe for drinking water. The other three were packaged butter lettuce and radicchio, romaine lettuce. All were atleast five times contaminated with perchlorate, as high as the amount California considers safe for drinking water.
